I follow Maria at De Estraperlo and have been looking at her pattern for Back Loop Fingerless Gloves for a while.
I finally decided to make them.
I found Patons Denim-y gray at Joanne’s for $.97/skein (purchased two) and decided that was the perfect yarn for the gloves (I’m kicking myself that I didn’t purchase all that was available-I really liked working with this yarn and love the look). I also had some Willow Everest black on hand for an accent color.
This is a very easy pattern to follow.
For both gloves I used a 5mm to make the ribbed cuff. Because I was using a larger hook than the pattern called for, I made 30 stitches instead of 32.
The left glove I continued to use a 5mm until the last 3 rows of the glove portion and then switched to a 6mm. I learned from making a pair of cable fingerless mitts that I need to increase hook size at the end or they are too tight around my fingers and I won’t wear them.
The left glove fit nicely, but I chose to increase to a 6mm hook for the entire “glove” portion of the right glove. Feels a little looser and I like that.
My color way was as follows:
Denim-y for the ribbed cuff.
Denim-y for the slip stitch row and following two rows.
Everest black for following two rows (I carried Denim-y rather than cutting and restarting).
Continued with denim-y until complete.
I chose to make a chain of 8 rather than 7 for the thumb hole, still counting 5 stitches for the thumb hole size.
A change I would make is I would have the first stitch of that row and the attaching stitch (of the chain 8) be through both loops rather than just the back loops. I think it would provide more stability to the thumb hole.
I then measure 1.5 inches from the top of the ribbed cuff to place the first button and measured 1.5 inches from the bottom of the ribbed cuff to place the second button.
A great pattern and I know I’ll wear these all winter!
Happy Crocheting & Knitting!

Very nice! I keep saying every year that I’m going to make myself a pair of gloves like this but I haven’t done it yet. Maybe I’ll try this pattern too. Hope you have a good week!
