Now that my ATB CAL is in its final stage and Christmas gift making is winding down, I’m looking towards my long term winter projects.
A friend requested a mermaid tail afghan for her toddler. I know she appreciates these things, so I’m happy to make one for her sweet girl E. I am using pink/purple tones and using Nadia’s (YARNutopia) free pattern. I love her site. Great patterns and tutorials, plus she is just so enthusiastic about crochet it is infectious!
My husband has never asked me to make him anything, but he started hinting at wanting an afghan. So, I have chosen RedHeart’s Holiday Cables Throw by Bonnie Barker.
I love all of Bonnie Barker’s patterns. There are great tutorials on her website (Bonnie Bay Crochet) for the different cable stitches. She is also the author of one of the most beautiful crochet pattern books I own, Contemporary Celtic Crochet.
I have received all the yarn I need for it (Caron Simply Soft in Kelly Green, purchased from the Yarn Factory Outlet during one of their sales).
Last but not least, I have chosen my second knitting project. I am not loving my first project. A simple color block scarf to match my finger-less gloves. New to knitting, I didn’t know a simple stockinette stitch rolls. So, unless anyone can tell me a solution, I plan on whip stitching it together and making a long tube scarf with pompoms on the end. My second project is Tin Can Knits Wheat Scarf, a free pattern in their Simple Collection e-book. A great e-book where each project builds on skills and the projects become more challenging. I have a skein of StyleCraft Special DK in a lovely color that will be perfect for this project.
What will you be working on this winter?
Happy Crocheting & Knitting!

Thank you for mentioning “Celtic Crochet”. I’ve never heard about it before and it sounds amazing! Would love to put my hands and my hook on it!

Wow, I wouldn’t know where to start with the mermaid tail afghan, I’m looking forward to seeing you progress with that. I’m afraid I don’t know how you could solve your scarf issue now that it’s made, but the best thing to do whilst knitting is to knit the first and last few stitches of each row so that they’re done in garter stitch and the main body is in stocking stitch, it gives a bit of a border but it prevents it from rolling.

Thank you for your tip Jo! The scarf was really a way for me to practice knitting and purling, so I’m not too upset about how its turned out. Its all a learning process!
