Yesterday I went on a trip to NYC!
My sewing studio (The Creative Sewing Studio) hosted a bus trip to the Garment District.
Myself and two friends went and had a great time.
Before leaving, our instructor let us know that within a few years the Garment District will basically be no more.
Rents are going sky high and stores are closing left and right.
We certainly saw that…”Store Closing” signs were everywhere.
Sad.
Although this is happening, there were many stores to go into.
I didn’t have any sewing project in mind, so I didn’t purchase any fabric.
That, however, didn’t stop me from ogling such pretty fashion fabric.
Many of the stores were simply overwhelming with the amount of fabric in such small places.
Once we saw multiple stores (and realized we weren’t going to pay $20-50/yard for fabric just so we could say we bought in NYC), we focused on trims.
I was looking for bag handles, pompoms and buttons I liked.
I could have spent all day going through the bins of individual buttons, but I found ones on the rack I liked (my friends did find beautiful bone and wood buttons).
I am amazed that stores that sell only ribbon and buttons have enough business to stay open, but boy were they busy.
We then had a leisurely lunch in a deli…delicious!
We wandered the district.
Many of the iconic statues were behind construction barriers unfortunately.
We went to Times Square and wandered.
I bough Miss ME and E tee-shirts because you have to come home with tee-shirts!
Then we wandered back to Mood Fabric and took in the upper floors.
We were amazed at the Mood U area and the sample student items that were on display, amazing workmanship.
Then we relaxed at a Korean Bar and toasted a day well spent!
A lot of time in a bus for a short time in the city, but very much worth it!
I’m excited to see some new one day class listings and plan on taking classes on making Holiday Wine Bottle Holders and Customized Christmas Stockings.
Today was a day for an am 5K to support our local YMCA, errands and cookie making.
Have a great week!

What a great travel blog. I can’t believe you resisted buying fabric. It looks sooooo tempting. I love the statue of the man at the sewing machine.
And yea to good food and wine.
Ah yes, 42nd street. Brings back memories of our trip to New York a year ago.

Sounds like a great trip. We have a fashion/garment district in Toronto too. I expect it too is suffering with climbing rents and a red hot real estate market. The button shops ARE amazing too!

Those fabrics were gorgeous but very $$$. Sad to hear the garment district is dying out. You did find some lovely treasures though. Sounds like a great trip.

Thank you for sharing that! How informative and what a treat as I will probably never make it there. I think your purchases were wise and wonderful….I would have done the same. I was just thinking how ‘overwhelming’ all that fabric was when you stated the exact same thing. What a great bus trip and the shirts for Miss ME and E are so cute. I can’t wait to see what you’re up to next! Have a great week and so glad you posted about this.

That sounds like a lovely day! There was a garment district like that in Montreal, I used to love going into those stores to get all sorts of fun fabrics and notions. I remember buying a feather boa there one year for Halloween! I’m glad you had a great time and a good toast to end the day! 🙂

What a shame about the district being forced out by the high rents. Sounds like you had a fun day.

What a cool trip! I’ve never been to the Garment District nor Mood but I wasn’t into sewing then.

What a cool trip! I can imagine how overwhelming it must have been with all those lovely fabrics on display. I went to the famous fabric market in Fürth last year, and wow! Just wow! I was completely overwhelmed and absolutely unable to pick anything. Those scissors buttons are adorable.
