Another co-worker is expecting a grandchild!

So, instead of the quilt I was planning on making, I decided to tackle a baby sweater.

My thinking was that a newborn size sweater wouldn’t take too long and it would help me understand the construction of a simple cardigan.

I was right!

I finished it super quick.

I used a free pattern (found on Ravelry) named Bug Warmer Baby Sweater.

Although it calls for worsted weight, I used Lion Brand Woolspun (chunky weight) in Fisherman.

Such a cute sweater!

It helped that I knit a pair of socks on DPNs, it made the sleeves very easy.

One skein of Woolspun brought me to the last four rows of the cardigan.

Using a second skein, I finished the hem and knit the sleeves (I chose short sleeves).

The only change I made to the pattern was to slip the last stitch purl wise to make a nice edge.

I had plenty left to make a newborn hat with a pompom.

For the hat, I also used a free pattern (found on Ravelry) named Backcountry Hat.

An easy, quick knit.

Together the sweater and hat make very cute gift!
